Men’s 100m Butterfly: Youssef Ramadan (EGY) is hoping to become the first swimmer representing Egypt to claim a medal at the world short course championships. Egypt would be the fifth African country to win silverware in this competition after South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Algeria.
Egypt’s only swimming medal at the world championships or Olympic Games was achieved by Farida Osman: two bronze medals in the women’s 50m butterfly at the world long course championships (2017 and 2019).
Women’s 800m Freestyle: Simona Quadarella (ITA) won a medal in this event at the 2018 World Short Course Championships (silver), the 2019 World Championships (silver) and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (bronze).
She can become the first woman to win four medals in the women’s 800m freestyle at world level tournaments (world championships/Olympic Games).
Men’s 100m Butterfly: Chad Le Clos (RSA) won the last four world short course titles in the men’s 100m butterfly. He could equal the record for most gold medals in a single event at the world short course championships, by James Hickman (GBR, 5 in men’s 200m butterfly).
Le Clos picked up the bronze medal in the men’s 200m butterfly on Thursday. The South African claimed a medal in both the 100m and 200m butterfly at each of the last three world short course championships (2014, 2016, 2018).
Men’s 200m Breaststroke: Erik Persson (SWE) can become the first Swedish man to claim a world title (short course or long course) since Lars Frölander won the 100m butterfly in 2001 (long course).
Women’s 100m Freestyle: Siobhan Haughey (HKG) can become the first woman to complete the 100m/200m freestyle double at a single world championships (long course or short course).
The only women who achieved this double at the Olympic Games are Kornelia Ender (GDR, 1976) and Barbara Krause (GDR, 1980).
