CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe visited the headquarters of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations match officials in Douala, Cameroon.

The President once again underscored the role of the match officials in the advancement of football in Africa.

He said: “For the last few months, we have spoken passionately about developing and advancing African football. We have spoken about making African football amongst the best in the world. But these cannot just be words and ideals alone, this must be followed by tangible actions and tangible results.

“The referees are key in the future and development of African football. The commitment to referees under my leadership and this leadership of CAF is one of the pillars and an important focus area.

Last week, history was made in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations when referee Salima Mukansanga together with Bouchra Karboubi and Carine Atemzabong became the first women to officiate at the competition.

“I was filled with so much pride watching Salima (Mukansanga) and her team officiating at that historic match. This was such a symbolic moment for all of us and for our continent. We have to give opportunities to people and I want to congratulate our Referee’s Department and Instructors for the wonderful work they are doing.”
