The athletes of the American Continent, Allyson Felix from the United States and Elaine Thompson-Herah from Jamaica are on the list of nominees as the Sportswoman of the year at the 2022 Laureus Awards while Yulimar Rojas from Venezuela is competing in the Breakthrough of the Year category.

Allison surpassed Car Lewis as the all-time winner in track and field events at the Olympics, after winning the 4x400m relay gold medal and the 400m bronze medal in Tokyo, taking her to 11 medals in five Olympic Games, 7 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze. She also has 13 World Championship gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze.

Elaine became the world’s fastest woman in track events at the Tokyo Olympics, where she won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold medals, defending the first two won in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, she won the 100m gold medal at the Oregon meeting, registering the second-best female mark in history.

Along with them, there is also the nomination of the Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas, in the Breakthrough of the Year category, in which also Neeraj Chopra from India is nominated. Yulimar, in 2021, broke the triple jump record that had been in force for 26 years, one more than the age of the Venezuelan, giving her country, after a jump of 15.67m, the first gold medal in the history of the Olympic Games. Yulimar is also the current World Champion.

In the Sportsman of the Year category, the representation of athletics is in the hands of the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge. Our sport also has a nomination with Marcel Hug from Switzerland in the Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability. The winners of the Laureus Awards, which reflect the greatest achievements in sports worldwide, will be chosen by the members of the Laureus Academy.
