The 2022 season of the Cameroon women’s top-flight championship dubbed the Guinness Super League got underway on Saturday with an opening match between the former winners Louves Minproff and reigning champions AS AWA FC.
The opening game played at the Military stadium in Ngoa Ekelle saw maiden Women’s CAF Champions League playoff representative, Louves Minproff suffering a 3-2 defeat to holders, AS AWA FC in the mouthwatering opener.
AS AWA captain Owona Mballa Geneviève opened the scoring for the defending champions from a penalty spot in the 39th minute after former Sporting Braga forward Farida Machia was brought down in the box.
Three minutes later, Indomitable Lionesses forward Kevin Ossol doubled the lead for AWA when she turned in a well places pass from Georgette Ngo Boum.
However, Danye Mimbang gave Louves Minproff a glimmer of hope as she reduced tally in the 53rd minute, but teenage sensation Brenda Tabe Ebika came off the bench to restore AWA’s two-goal lead with a superb long range volley 14 minutes later.
Although Adrienne Mekuko pulled one back for Louves Minproff with just nine minutes of regulation time left to play, coach Hassan Balla Ibrahim set up a solid defensive bloc to ensure AWA claimed the first ever triumph over Minproff.
Prior to Saturday’s League opener, Louves Minproff had won thrice and drew six times in their nine previous meetings with AWA but the latter did enough to break the jinx on the day.
Following a scintillating performance for AWA, U20 Lionesses forward Georgette Ngo Boum was voted the woman of the match, having contributed the second goal of the encounter.
AS AWA FC had edged Louves Minproff to the coveted league title last season, and will be representing Cameroon at the zonal playoffs, where they will seek to qualify for the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s champions League finals.
In the other opening fixtures, newly promoted Authentic FC of Douala claimed a 1-0 win over Renaissance, while FC Ebolowa earned a similar result over Eding Sports, while Virginia Leeddjou came off the bench to inspire Caiman FF of Douala to a 1-0 victory over Canon FF.
The remaining opening ties will see Eclair FC host Vision Sports of Bamenda on Wednesday while Amazone FAP welcome newly promoted Lekie FC on the same day.
The Cameroon’s Guinness Super League has witnessed lots of reforms for the new football season, amongst which is an increase in the salaries of players, prize money and the subventions given to the 12 top-flight clubs.
