Boxing fans have wanted to see Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford step into the ring together for years.
The welterweight bout finally may be happening.
Spence defeated Yordenis Ugas on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Texas with a 10th round TKO. Spence entered the fight with the WBC and IBF titles to his name and took Ugas’ WBA belt, giving the Dallas-area native three of the four in the weight class.
That all sets up for a much-anticipated unification matchup against Crawford, who owns the WBO belt. The winner would be the undisputed welterweight champion, while the other would receive the first loss of his career.
“Everybody knows who I want next. I want Terence Crawford next,” Spence [29-0] said. “That’s the fight that I want, that’s the fight that everybody wants. I’m going to go over there and take his shit too. Terence, I’m coming for that [expletive] belt.”
Crawford, who most recently defeated Shawn Porter in November, tweeted Spence his congratulations – and a desire to meet him between the ropes.
“Now the real fight happens,” Crawford [38-0] wrote. “No more talk no more side of the street let’s go!!!!”
Following his victory by TKO over Porter, Crawford left Bob Arum’s promotion company, Top Rank, paving the way for a Spence fight.
