Tanzania and Ethiopia have today sealed their places in the semi finals of the on-going CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2022 in Njeru, Uganda.
The Tanzania team humbled Zanzibar 12-0 in a Group B match played at the FUFA technical Centre in Njeru, while Ethiopia picked a 4-0 win against South Sudan.
Coach Oscar Mirambo’s team that came top in Group B with a better goal difference than Ethiopia who also finished with seven points will now face Burundi in one of the semi final ties on Thursday. The second semi final match will see hosts Uganda face Ethiopia.
In the match played at the FUFA technical Centre in Njeru, Clement Opa Tukumbuke netted four goals, while Moroccan based Omary Mwanahamisi also bagged a hattrick to guide Tanzania to a huge win.
Ester Mabanza, Protasia Mbunda, Diana Lucas Msewa, Janeth Pangamwene and Enekia Kasonga Lunyamila also netted a goal each for Tanzania.
“It is good we have completed the group unbeaten and topped it. We now have to go back to the drawing board and prepare well for the Burundi match,” says Tanzania’s coach Mirambo.
The second match played at the same time at the Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe saw Ethiopia made sure they collected maximum points against the South Sudan team.
Aregash Kalsa Tadesse scored a hattrick for Ethiopia, while skipper Geinore Loza Abera also converted a penalty. Amy Lasu missed a penalty for South Sudan.
Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director says the level of competition has been high in the group stage with over 40 goals scored. “This competition is also giving Uganda and Burundi good preparations ahead of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to take place in Morocco,” said Gecheo.
