Ghana’s Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew, has stepped up to take full responsibility for the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, Ayew addressed the chaotic display that led to Ghana’s elimination from the tournament, acknowledging his role as the captain.

“As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch for the playing body,” Ayew expressed in the video. He added, “In Football, these are things that happen. These are things that make you stronger. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger individually and collectively.”

The apology comes eight days after Ghana’s untimely exit, marked by Mozambique equalizing with two goals in added time. Ghana finished third in a challenging group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and secured back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, sealing their elimination.

This marks the second consecutive AFCON where Ghana has exited at the group stages without securing a victory, extending the nation’s quest for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.

Ayew’s apology reflects his acknowledgment of the team’s collective responsibility and aims to address the disappointment felt by Ghanaian fans.
