The Nima Cluster of Schools will be the venue selected for the celebration of this year’s Olympic Day activities by the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Wednesday June 26th, 2024.
This year’s celebration is under the theme ‘Lets Move And Celebrate’ and aims at igniting a collective passion for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by encouraging people to ge active and feel connected through sports.
According to the President of the GOC Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, Ghana will celebrate the day in a unique style with the collaboration of the French Embassy in Ghana and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
He said health of people, especially children is very important and as the world celebrates the important day, people, especially kids and the youth should be conscious about their health and live healthy lifestyles.
He called for regular exercises, socializing and eating of balanced diet.
He also urged kids and the youth to have interest in sports and also study about Olympism, the Olympic Games, Sportsmanship, Volunteerism and know much about the activities of the IOC, GOC and other sports organization.
The GOC President pressed the media to project activities that would encourage the youth to be interested in sports.
He noted that it is not only football that they can play, but they can also get involved in basketball, handball, tennis, swimming, athletics or track & field, table tennis, tennis, baseball, badminton, cycling, boxing, e sports, golf, hockey, fencing, kick boxing, rugby, weightlifting, judo, volleyball, wrestling and others.
He saluted the nation’s sportsmen and women who sacrifice for the nation and strive to mount the podium. He commended Paris 2024 which is the first Games with full gender parity conforming to reforms of Olympic Agenda.
The Olympic Day, established in 1948 is the global celebration of sport and getting people active on June 23 each year to commemorate the day the IOC was founded in 1894 by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertine.
This year’s Olympic Games is taking place in Coubertine’s birthplace, and it is another special opportunity for the power of sports to unite and entertain the world.
