Gambia edged out Madagascar 1-0 in their 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Monday at Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi to revive their chances of qualifying for the competition.

Musa Barrow’s decisive goal in the 62nd minute handed the Scorpions the vital three points, boosting their chances of securing a place in the tournament in Morocco next year.

Barrow’s goal came after sustained pressure from the Gambian side, as Yankuba Minteh’s cross found him unmarked inside the box.

Barrow’s initial effort was blocked, but he swiftly pounced on the rebound to slot the ball home, sending the Gambian fans into wild celebrations.

This win lifts the Scorpions to second place in Group A with five points after four matches, one point behind leaders Tunisia. Comoros drop to third place on five points as well, but with a lower goal difference.

Madagascar remains at the bottom of the group with just two points from four games.

The other Group A match of Matchday Four, between Comoros and Tunisia, will take place on Tuesday.

Gambia’s performance was resilient, with notable contributions from Ebrima Jarju and Ebou Adams in the midfield.

Despite missing a penalty in the 28th minute, Gambia kept up the pressure and eventually found the breakthrough.

Madagascar had a few chances, with Loïc Lapoussin’s late effort being their closest attempt, but goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye kept his clean sheet intact.

As the qualifiers progress, Gambia will be looking to maintain their momentum, while Madagascar’s hopes of qualifying hang by a thread.
