Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has announced the passing of his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, in an emotional tribute.
The former Black Stars captain, who remains the highest-scoring African player in FIFA World Cup history, lost his father on Friday, July 24, 2026.
However, the former BBC African footballer of the Year winner has taken to social media to express gratitude for the sacrifices his father made towards his successful football career.
“I’m happy you saw my greatness da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P (ASASE J).” Gyan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Over a glittering career spanning more than two decades, the Ghanaian icon established himself as one of the country’s greatest-ever footballers, becoming the Black Stars’ all-time leading scorer and earning global recognition for his exploits at both club and international levels.
His father was a constant figure behind the scenes, providing encouragement and guidance as Gyan rose through the ranks to become a household name in Ghanaian football.
Following the announcement of his father’s passing, tributes from fellow footballers, top football administrators, celebrities, and supporters have started pouring in, with many offering their condolences to Gyan and his family.
Meanwhile, funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
