Accra Hearts of Oak has welcomed Richard Kingson, a legendary Ghanaian goalkeeper, as their new goalkeeping coach. This brings back one of the country’s most celebrated shot-stoppers to the Phobians’ technical team.
The 48-year-old, affectionately known as ‘Olele’, was unveiled by the club on Monday. “A legend returns. From guarding the post to grooming the next generation. Welcome home, Richard Kingson, our new Goalkeepers’ Coach,” the club posted.
Kingson is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s finest goalkeepers, having enjoyed an international career spanning over 15 years. He represented the Black Stars at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups playing a key role in Ghana’s historic runs to the round of 16 in Germany and the quarter-finals in South Africa.
He also played in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and earned Team of the Tournament honours at the 2008 and 2010 editions.
At club level, Kingson began his career with Accra Great Olympics before embarking on a long spell in Europe. He played for several clubs in Turkey, including Galatasaray, before moving to England, where he featured for Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool. He also had spells in Sweden and Cyprus before returning to Ghana.
Following his retirement from professional football, Kingson transitioned into coaching and has gained considerable experience in goalkeeping development. He has served as Ghana’s national team goalkeepers’ coach on two occasions, including a tenure from 2017 to 2019 and another between 2021 and 2024.
Kingson joins the Phobians as the club continues to reshape its technical team ahead of the new season. His wealth of experience at the highest level of international football is expected to prove valuable as Hearts of Oak seek to strengthen their goalkeeping department and develop the next generation of talent.
For the Phobians, the return of a Ghanaian football icon represents both a homecoming and a significant addition to their coaching structure as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
