Ghana’s Adelaide Djabatey saw her maiden Commonwealth Games campaign come to an end after suffering a unanimous points defeat to Fiji’s Jasmine Dunakamakama in the Women’s Featherweight (57kg) Round of 16.
The bout, staged at the SEC Hall on Sunday, July 26, ended in a 5-0 unanimous decision in favour of the Fijian, who progressed to the quarter-finals after a composed performance.
Adelaide, a Form Three General Arts student at Holy Trinity Senior High School in Accra, was making her first appearance at the Commonwealth Games and displayed determination despite coming up against a more experienced opponent.
Her exit marks another setback for Team Ghana’s women’s boxing team, becoming the second female boxer to bow out of the competition following Nancy Bamfo’s earlier elimination. Ghana’s hopes of securing medals in boxing now rest on the remaining members of the national team as the competition continues.
