Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has vowed that Ghana will fight to improve the record of African teams at the 2026 World Cup, following the elimination of Senegal and DR Congo in the round of 32.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s crucial knockout clash with Colombia on Saturday, the Portuguese tactician acknowledged the challenge facing African nations but remained defiant.
“It is a challenge for us to improve the stat [of African teams], and we will do our best to make everybody back home proud,” Queiroz told Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith.
Senegal and DR Congo both exited the tournament after surrendering halftime leads. Senegal led Belgium 2-0 before losing 3-2, while DR Congo lost 2-1 to England after taking a 1-0 lead.
Queiroz also revealed how the devastating floods in Accra have personally affected him and the team. He said the players are aware of the tragedy and are determined to give those affected something to smile about.
“The floods have affected me personally. The team will try and give those affected something to smile about,” he said.
Ghana face Colombia in Kansas City on July 3. A victory would see the Black Stars reach the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010 and keep the dream of an African nation lifting the World Cup alive.
