France remain committed to competing at next month’s FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup despite UEFA maintaining the possibility of a boycott of FIFA competitions.
The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed on Thursday that its plans for the tournament in Poland remain unchanged, saying: “For now, France will be participating to the FIFA U20 Women World Cup.”
The uncertainty follows a dispute between UEFA and FIFA over plans announced by FIFA president Gianni Infantino to sell stakes in some competitions to private investors.
UEFA’s 55 member associations subsequently voted to boycott FIFA competitions unless the proposals were withdrawn.
FIFA has since abandoned the plans, with Infantino apologising for what he called his “errors”. UEFA said on Thursday, however, that the boycott threat remained in place.
England’s position is less clear. The Football Association has not confirmed whether its Under-20 women’s team will participate in the tournament, which begins in Poland in 29 days.
Six European teams are scheduled to compete: England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and hosts Poland.
With UEFA’s position still unresolved, the participation of the European teams remains a developing issue ahead of the tournament.
