The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is taking deliberate steps to broaden rugby’s reach and position the sport as a powerful tool for discipline, teamwork, and national development, with a renewed focus on Ghana’s security services.
As part of this vision, the President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Ms Insuah Rafatu held a strategic meeting with two distinguished women from Ghana’s security services, ASP Bernice Timbilla, Director of Sports of the Ghana Police Service, and 2IC Ramatu Abass of the Ghana Fire Service.
The meeting, held at the Technical Sports Office of the Ghana Fire Service, focused on strengthening collaboration between the GRFU and the security services while exploring opportunities to develop, promote and expand rugby across the country.
The engagement represents more than a meeting between sports administrators and security officials. It signals a new chapter in efforts to make rugby more accessible to institutions whose values closely align with those of the sport.
Rugby thrives on discipline, courage, teamwork, respect and resilience, qualities that are equally important to Ghana’s security services. By building stronger links with the Police and Fire Service, the GRFU hopes to create new pathways for talent development, institutional rugby and greater participation.
The involvement of the security services could also provide opportunities for officers to take part in rugby as athletes, coaches, officials and ambassadors, while helping introduce the sport to a wider community of young people.
At the heart of the engagement are two women whose commitment to sport continues to challenge traditional boundaries and highlight the growing influence of women in Ghana’s sporting landscape.
