Alidu Seidu’s future has been decided for now.
The Ghana international will remain at Stade Rennes after the French club rejected approaches from Strasbourg and Hull City during the closing stages of the transfer window.
Interest in Seidu gathered pace as the deadline approached, with Strasbourg exploring a move within France while Hull City pushed for a deal that would have taken the defender to England. Rennes, however, refused to sanction his departure.
The decision ends the immediate uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old, but it may not close the door on a future move.
Seidu is contracted to Rennes until June 2029, meaning the club retains control of his situation. However, with interest already emerging from several sides, the January transfer window could provide another opportunity for him to leave, particularly if his situation at Rennes does not change significantly.
For now, his focus returns to Rennes, where he faces the challenge of fighting for his place after returning from injury.
Seidu has already taken an important step in his comeback, having recovered in time to be part of Ghana’s squad at the recently concluded World Cup. His inclusion was a significant indication that he had regained sufficient fitness to return to the international stage.
He must now build on that recovery at club level, with regular playing time likely to be crucial to maintaining his momentum.
That will also be closely watched by the Black Stars.
Ghana are preparing for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and Seidu will hope his continued presence in Ligue 1 strengthens his case for another international call-up.
Carlos Queiroz remains in charge of the Black Stars and is expected to name his squad for the qualifiers. Having returned from injury and made the World Cup squad, Seidu will be hoping to remain part of the Portuguese coach’s plans.
His versatility across the backline remains a valuable asset for Ghana, but his ability to regain a regular role at Rennes could ultimately determine how firmly he features in Queiroz’s thinking.
