Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan says his priority for the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup is simple—advance from the group stage—while acknowledging that the highly anticipated clash against England will be one of the tournament’s standout fixtures.
Ghana will compete against England, Croatia, and Panama, beginning their campaign on June 17 against Panama, before a highly anticipated clash with England on June 23.
Speaking in New York at the official unveiling of Ghana’s World Cup kit by PUMA, Gyan admitted the quality of the English side but stressed that Ghana’s objective remains straightforward.
“We are playing against England, we are in the same group. You know, on paper, England of course, one of the best in the world right now,” Gyan told PUMA during the jersey launch.
He continued by highlighting the need for focus beyond the headline fixture:
“You know but people are optimistic about that game. To play against England. I’m not thinking about playing England, I just want Ghana to qualify from the group stage to go to the next stage of the competition, so we’ll see what happens. But Ghana against England is going to be a very, very good game.”
Gyan shares a personal history with England, famously scoring a last-minute equaliser in a 1-1 friendly draw in 2011—a moment that remains etched in Ghana’s football folklore.
With enthusiasm growing and preparations underway, Ghana’s path through Group L promises drama, emotion, and the potential for new heroes to emerge on the world stage.
