Ghana’s women’s handball team suffered a 36-29 defeat to hosts Burkina Faso in their opening match of the maiden IHF Nations Trophy on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, despite taking a one-goal lead into halftime.
Ghana produced a determined first-half display, leading 17-16 at the break after a closely fought opening period in Ouagadougou.
The team, however, struggled to maintain that momentum after the restart as Burkina Faso stepped up the pressure with quick counter-attacks and timely interceptions.
The hosts raced into a four-goal advantage within the opening five minutes of the second half, while Ghana struggled to find the back of the net. Despite efforts from the Ghanaian side to respond and changes in strategy from the technical team, Burkina Faso maintained control and gradually extended their advantage.
Ghana eventually lost 36-29 to begin their campaign on a disappointing note.
The result means Ghana will need a strong response in their next Group B encounter against Nigeria as they look to keep their hopes of progressing in the competition alive.
Ghana entered the tournament as silver medallists from the ANOCA Zone III Games, while Burkina Faso are the reigning gold medallists.
The maiden IHF Nations Trophy features seven countries, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Togo and Liberia.
