The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has underscored the need for early preparation and sustained funding as Ghana intensifies its build-up to the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Key Highlights from the GOC President

In an interview with GH Sports News, Akpokavie emphasized that talent alone is insufficient without proper planning and financial backing. He stated:

“The main thing is that we need to be prepared, and preparation is key. And funding is one of the main things.”

Strategic Planning and Funding

The GOC has already begun engaging the Ministry of Sports to secure support for Team Ghana. While acknowledging the sector minister’s commitment, Akpokavie stressed that government backing must be complemented by broader support systems. The GOC is actively courting support from both private and public sector stakeholders to strengthen its financial base.

Athlete Build-up and Training

Structured training programs are already underway across multiple disciplines:

•Boxing: The team is set for international training tours.

•Judo: Focused preparation is ongoing, with one athlete training in France and another locally.

•Swimming: Athletes are benefiting from overseas training for vital exposure.

•Track and Field: Local training camps have begun for Ghana-based athletes.

Building Towards a Stronger Showing

The GOC’s proactive strategy aims to combine funding, exposure, and structured training to give Team Ghana a competitive advantage. Akpokavie remains optimistic that this approach will translate into improved performances at the upcoming games.
