Iñaki Williams marked his return to action for Athletic Club with a historic appearance and a late equaliser as the Spanish side drew 1-1 with Elche in La Liga on Saturday.
Just 24 hours after announcing his retirement from international football with Ghana, Williams returned to club duty and played 81 minutes before scoring late to rescue a point for Athletic Club.
The goal capped an impressive outing for the Ghanaian-born forward, who recorded four shots, made 62 touches and had 10 touches inside the opposition box. He also completed one of three attempted dribbles and won seven duels.
Williams’ performance earned him a 7.8 rating as he made another significant mark in Athletic Club history.
The 32-year-old surpassed Joseba Etxeberria’s 514 appearances to move into fifth place on the club’s all-time appearance list with 515 games. He now trails Jose Angel Iribar, Oscar de Marcos, Iker Muniain and Rojo on the list.
Williams is now just 100 appearances away from reaching the 615-game mark, which would take him beyond the current record held by Iribar, who has 614 appearances.
His latest milestone comes shortly after ending his four-year international career with Ghana, with Williams now fully focused on his continued contribution to Athletic Club.
