Ghana plans to send approximately 40 athletes to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Ghana Olympic Committee [GOC] president Richard Akpokavie has announced.
Akpokavie disclosed the plans on Saturday, May 16, 2026, during the GOC’s Annual General Meeting at the Best Premier Hotel. The Glasgow Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

“We expect to send a contingent of approximately 40 athletes, depending on outstanding qualifications, together with 21 officials including coaches, medical personnel, safeguarding officers, and the Chef de Mission,” Akpokavie told delegates.
Eight sports on the card Team Ghana will compete in eight disciplines: Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Judo, Para Athletics, Para Powerlifting, Para Swimming, and Weightlifting.
Akpokavie acknowledged that the 2026 edition is a scaled-down version compared to Birmingham 2022, but said he is confident in Ghana’s athletes.
“Although this year’s Commonwealth Games is a scaled-down version compared to Birmingham 2022, we believe our athletes will make Ghana proud. We wish our gallant athletes the very best in Glasgow,” he said.
Beyond sport, the GOC will partner with government to use the Games as a platform to promote Ghana globally.
Akpokavie revealed plans for a “Ghana House” concept on the sidelines of the Games, designed to showcase Ghanaian business opportunities, tourism, and the creative arts.
“I am also pleased to inform you that, on the sidelines of the Games, we will collaborate with government to promote Ghana through our ‘Ghana House’ concept,” he said.
“We hope to return from Glasgow not only with medals, but also with new partnerships and friendships that will create opportunities and jobs for young people.”
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will mark the 23rd edition of the multi-sport event. Glasgow last hosted in 2014.
