Eric Tinkler joins Asante Kotoko
Ghana Premier League powerhouse Asante Kotoko have announced the appointment of Eric Tinkler as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming league season.
Tinkler, a former captain of the South Africa national team, Bafana Bafana, joins Asante Kotoko following fruitful negotiations.
With over 30 years of experience in elite football, Tinkler replaces Karim Zito, who resigned in February last year after the Porcupine Warriors were eliminated from the FA Cup by Aduana Stars. Prince Owusu was handed the role on an interim basis.
Tinkler arrives at Asante Kotoko on the back of an impressive coaching career at some of South Africa’s biggest clubs, including Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, and Bidvest Wits FC.
“The appointment brings to the Porcupine Warriors family a world-class coach of proven pedigree, extensive top-flight experience, and a distinguished playing career at the highest level of the game,” part of Asante Kotoko’s statement announcing Tinkler’s appointment reads.
Tinkler holds a CAF License A coaching certificate and comes to Asante Kotoko with vast experience. He guided Orlando Pirates to a CAF Champions League runner-up finish and SuperSport United to a CAF Confederation Cup runner-up finish, and has also won domestic honors.
As a player, Tinkler earned 48 caps for South Africa and captained the national team at the 2002 AFCON. He also represented the country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
He enjoyed a successful professional playing career in England, Italy, and Portugal, and was part of the South African squad that won the 1996 AFCON.
