Alex Amankwah has secured a place in the final of the men’s 800m event at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships after producing a determined performance in the heats on the opening day.

The Ghanaian middle-distance runner made history as the first athlete from the host nation to reach a final at the competition currently taking place at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Amankwah, who is based in the United States, finished third in his heat during the qualifying round. Although only the top two athletes earned automatic qualification spots, his time proved quick enough to secure progression as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers.

The qualification keeps Ghana’s hopes alive in the middle-distance events as the championships continue on home soil.

Amankwah will now turn his attention to Wednesday’s final, where he will compete for a podium finish against some of the continent’s top 800m runners.

The men’s 800m final is scheduled for 4:15 pm on May 13
