Host nation Ghana concluded the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships without a gold medal after a challenging final day at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Despite strong expectations from home supporters throughout the competition, Team Ghana finished 17th on the overall medals table with a total of five medals — one silver and four bronze.
The final day featured several key events across both track and field disciplines, including relay races, high jump, javelin and sprint finals as the curtain came down on the championship in Accra.
One of Ghana’s final hopes for a podium finish rested on team captain Joseph Paul Amoah in the men’s 200m final, but the sprinter finished fifth in a competitive race.
There was also disappointment for the women’s 4x400m relay team, who narrowly missed out on a medal after placing fourth, while the men’s relay quartet struggled in their race and crossed the line last in a time of 3:05.14.
Ghana’s medal tally at the championships included bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay events.
Alex Amankwah secured another bronze for the host nation in the men’s 800m, while Florence Agyemang also finished third in the women’s 400m.
The country’s only silver medal of the competition came from Esther Obenewaa in the high jump event.
South Africa national athletics team dominated the championship standings with 18 medals, including nine gold medals, to finish top of the table.
