Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has been handed an ambitious mandate to guide Ghana to at least the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician recently signed a four-month contract to lead the West African powerhouse to the global showpiece after parting ways with Otto Addo on the back of unimpressive results in friend lies against Austria and Germany.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams expressed Queiroz’s appointment comes with high expectations, stressing the target is to surpass Ghana’s historic 2010 World Cup run, where the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals.
“We have given the coach a good target to do better in the World Cup than we did in 2010. It was the same target given to Otto Addo,” the Buem MP said.
“The team should be ranked among the top five in Africa, and we should win the AFCON, which we did not qualify for. At the moment, we are not even among the best in Africa.
“We want to do better in the World Cup, and that is by getting into the semifinals of the World Cup. Even better, we want to win the World Cup, and that is the ultimate aim,” Mr Adams added.
Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having been drawn in Group L alongside football powerhouses England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23, and wrapping up their group matches against Croatia on June 27.
With a new coach in charge and high expectations from the top, all eyes will be on whether Queiroz can transform Ghana’s bold ambitions into reality on football’s biggest stage.
