The Ghana Olympic Committee [GOC] has been told to restart work on the stalled Olympafrica Project in Amasaman by the end of June or refund $100,000 disbursed in 2022, GOC president Richard Akpokavie has revealed.

Akpokavie disclosed the ultimatum on Saturday, May 16, 2026, during the GOC’s Annual General Meeting at the Best Premier Hotel in Accra.
“This project has stalled for some time, and the Olympafrica Secretariat has expressed concern over the delays. Following engagements with the Executive Director, the plan is to resume construction by the end of June; otherwise, we may be required to refund the $100,000 disbursed to us in 2022,” he said.

To address the delay, the GOC Board has established a committee headed by Nii Lante Bannerman. The committee has engaged key stakeholders, including the Ga North Municipal Assembly, to ensure construction begins on schedule.
“We have provided in our budget the sum of $100,000 to start construction of a multipurpose hall this year,” Akpokavie added.
He also noted that the Minister for Sports and Recreation has pledged the Ministry’s support toward completing the project.
The Olympafrica Project is designed to provide youth and communities with sports and recreational facilities. Work in Amasaman has been on hold for several months, prompting concern from the Olympafrica Secretariat.
Akpokavie said the Executive Director of Olympafrica is expected in Ghana in June for further discussions on completing the project and reviewing progress on the ground.
The GOC is now working to meet the June deadline to avoid refunding the funds and to keep the project on track.
